KAHEL TO THE QUEEN. What we have here are PONKAN ORANGES, which are the same variety as the famous Sagada Oranges. Peelable, sweet and local. We have 200 kilos coming. This is what they look like on the tree and off. Be one of the first members to enjoy Ponkan Oranges. I believe our grandmothers (or great grandmothers, for the younger members here) called this orange “KAHEL”. if you’ve heard of the term, this is that. When I was very young, on car trips, this is what my grandmother always brings in her bag. The juicy sections are an instant snack and the peel are instant cure for carsickness. She’d crush them a bit the palm of her hand in order to release the citrus spritz and let me sniff them. If you haven’t heard of this folk remedy, perhaps you should buy just so you can try.

RAISE THE FLAG FOR SAGADA. When you pretend to be from a culture you’re not, and your intention for doing that is to benefit from it, that’s cultural appropriation. When you take the name of a town in order to better sell a fruit that does not even grow there, and that fruit flies in from another country 3,000 miles away, that’s economic appropriation. Some would even call it economic sabotage.

Oh, the unfairness of it all. I am angry and sad to learn that every single “Sagada orange” as we know it comes from China. It was a Chinese farmer who grew that and he is making the money. The oranges that our own farmers in Sagada grow are green in color and peel like a ponkan. There is no popular demand for it for the simple reason that most people do not know that this is the real Sagada orange. We are sending our money to the wrong farmers, and our country does not win.
