WORM POOP ISLAND. As we fearfully crossed this creaking wooden bridge, Andie imagined that our combined weight would send us crashing through the rotted planks and into the murky water below. We needed to cross this bridge in order to get to “Worm Poop Island”. You can see why we called it that. As soon we jumped onto solid groud, our shoes landed on earthworm mounds. Everywhere you look, clump over clump of pure fertilizer that passed through the digestive systems of native earthworms. In this one-hectare island cut off from the main farm by water, and over many decades, these creatures did nothing but multiply in the millions underfoot. Native earthworms, not the imported African Night Crawlers. This is an Indiana Jones treasure trove of agricultural gold called vermicast. The gentleman farmer who owned the island had the good sense to send samples to the laboratory at U.P. Los Banos, and they said it has the highest concentration of humic acid of any sample they’ve seen. This stuff will Jack-and-the-beanstalk your plants! During the pandemic we offered this super vermicast to members and they’ve had extremely excellent results using it on their houseplants and garden plots. But you know, the beautiful thing about this is that some bags may contain worm eggs, which means if you use this fertilizer in your garden, very soon you will have little underground helpers working overtime to make the soil around your house extraordinarily healthy and productive. Imagine that.
