WE SHOULD BE MOURNING THE BEES. Our home city of Baguio is absolutely filled with tourists here for the Pangabenga Flower Festival street parade and street dancing. They are helping us celebrate the blooming of the flowers and all that noise. We should be making noise about that. What we should be talking about are the bees, we should be mourning, we should be helping each other save them. You see, we discovered a quiet but devastating carnage in the Benguet town of Kabayan, where some farmers raise bees. There is no sunflower honey to be had because all the bees have dropped from the air and died. Mounds of dead bee bodies at the foot of the hives, poisoned by the cocktail of chemicals that our farmers spray on their crops. “Nalason ng malakas na chemical” reports the beefarmer — and we have duly reported it to the good city mayor, and now we are reporting it to you. This really says a lot about the agricultural poison we ingest in our bodies, the need to support organic farming, and the acceptance of ugly produce. Hasn’t this been our message for years? Of all God’s living beings, bees are the most vitally important because without them our entire food ecosystem would collapse. These are photos that the farmers sent us — how sad, how alarming.
