WATERMELON MAIDEN. On the long road to Camp Mingan, we pulled over to pickup a watermelon in Nueva Ecija. I think I distracted this woman with my playful question “Anong mas matamis, yung pakwan mo o ang ngiti mo?” Hearing that, in her resulting eagerness to please, she hastily moved two watermelons to get at a bigger, redder, sweeter one underneath to give me. The moment she did so, the two watermelons ontop rolled and fell to the ground…and smashed wide open. For four days I wondered if I had some fault for that, and should I have offered to pay for those watermelons. Driving home after four days, we passed by the watermelon stall and I just had to pull over. Had to do the right thing. This is my interaction with her, my phone secretly recording. Anong mas matamis, yung pakwan nya o ang ngiti ko?
